Have mercy on the ratepayers…

THE ethekwini Municipality has failed its ratepayers by increasing the rates from July 1, which has made me feel sad.

It seems many of our councillors and those who earn money from the City are now smug in their position. Are they afraid to upset the powers at City Hall? Most definitely.

The only party actively holding placard demonstrations is the African Democratic Change, that feels the tariffs are unfair. The party has made its voice heard during this trying period, by holding mass demonstrations.

Well done Visvin Reddy. I urge all ratepayers to engage with one voice regarding the increases. Will the municipality have the gall to inflict upon its citizens the increase in rates (5%), electricity by 7%, sanitation by 8.5% and water 8.5%.

I say yes, they don’t care for its people.

During the pandemic which has affected all ratepayers, the loss of income, unemployment and loss of loved ones, it will be tragic if the municipality were to go ahead with these exorbitant increases to further burden the poor taxpayer.

There has been no constructive attempts to alleviate the hardship by the powers that be. If they proceed with their plans, then I have no doubt that every single citizen will treat the increases with the contempt it deserves. Rest assured as taxpayers, justice will prevail.
