Compliments to Premier Zikalala

IN THE exclusive interview with the Daily News on July 30, KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala outlined his assessment and plans for our province post the anarchy of the last three weeks.

It was to my mind a realistic reflection of the looting and perceived racial tension in our midst.

The premier needs to be complimented for the insight and thoughts expressed in the interview.

Of particular significance and certainly reassuring were the priorities that the provincial government had in mind – the need to restore peace and to deal with the causal factors, as opposed to treating the symptoms, which unfortunately is often the case on the part of the government at all levels.

The key issues of escalating unemployment, the ever-increasing levels and depth of widespread poverty in very large sections of our population, especially in the informal sectors and in rural areas, as well as the need to support SMMES, are also planned for.

The urgency of the need for immediate implementation of the plans is also appreciated by the premier. Of special significance was that the provincial government was already engaging with all communities to address the recent challenges through integration and working with relevant structures to bring about social cohesion, which to ignore would be at our own peril.

In conclusion, in acknowledging the commendable proposed plans of our premier I wish to emphasise the absolute urgent need of meaningful implementation of the envisaged programmes with decisive action, detailed planning and completion within scheduled time frames.

Well done, our premier.
